Empowered Support for Empathic Providers
Supervision, Training, and Consultation for Therapists
Supervision, Training, and Consultation for Therapists
You've got the degree to do the work, and the clarity to know you want to forge your own path. You absolutely can't do this alone, I mean legally speaking this is true, but also, you need support. I'm here to help you learn how to launch - as a business owner and as a therapist.
"I had an OK internship, but I want more out of my supervision."
"I want the flexibility of managing my own schedule."
"I'm excited about being able to work with the right fit clients."
"I'm eager to learn the business side of running my practice."
"I'm looking for a supervisor who will help me dig deeper and help me grow."
"I'm hungry for feedback."
"I'm ready to go, but I need support and guidance along the way."
"I don't know where to start with opening a private practice."
I get it, I really do. I left graduate school with a lot of training and experience working with clients that I wasn't a great fit for, doing a therapy modality that didn't gel with the sense of who I wanted to be.
I took jobs at community mental health settings, even though I knew they weren't quite right for me.
I worked with clients who didn't want to be in therapy, and sometimes didn't like me very much.
I threw interventions at clients like spaghetti at the wall - hoping something would stick.
I wasn't confident enough to start a private practice right out of graduate school.
I couldn't see the path forward without a license and with no idea how to run the business side of things.
When I finally did start my practice, six years, two kids, and one career detour later, I was thrilled to discover it was all much easier than I had imagined.
Yes, there was a lot to learn, there were many billing mistakes, and client communication mishaps, but over time, I developed systems and policies to manage the administrative work load.
Once I got all of those systems in place, I had the band-with to focus on my clinical work. I quickly realized that the toolkit I had wasn't really serving me. I wasn't sure what to do with clients, how to get unstuck, and even how to set goals and treatment plan. (What were all those years at the agencies for)?
I turned to a seasoned colleague for clinical supervision, even though I wasn't required to get it any more. She helped me dig deeper into my work.
She encouraged me to explore my theory of counseling and what I do that is serving people.
Eventually through our work I found my way to a theory that clicked with me.
I spent the next four years diving deep into Internal Family Systems Therapy. (So deep that I decided to end supervision with this wonderful colleague and get consultation from an IFS specialist).
As my life has marched on, my career has also evolved. This is the beauty of a therapy career. We learn so much about ourselves through our work. We also learn to give ourselves permission to grow and change. To pivot.
I've eagerly incorporated my IFS lens into my role as a teacher and supervisor. While I encourage supervisees to find their own approach, I find IFS to be an important tool to foster self-awareness, and case conceptualization of clients.
I'm always excited to utilize my experience to supervise clinicians in their courageous endeavor to build their private practice and find themselves as therapists.
